Le pape François a appelé, le 26 janvier, lors d'une audience collective au Vatican, à prier pour la paix en Ukraine. Son appel a été diffusé sur le site Vatican News.

Le souverain pontife a précédemment proposé de passer la journée du 26 janvier à prier pour la paix dans le contexte de la situation concernant ce pays.

"Je lance un appel sincère à toutes les personnes de bonne volonté pour qu'elles prient le Dieu tout-puissant afin que toutes les actions et initiatives politiques servent la fraternité humaine plutôt que les intérêts partisans", a-t-il indiqué.

Le pape François s'est exprimé à plusieurs reprises en faveur d'un dialogue international pour le règlement en Ukraine. Au printemps 2016, il a lancé une collecte de fonds dans toutes les paroisses catholiques d’Europe pour fournir une aide humanitaire à la population ukrainienne
